Princess Urduja was a warrior-princess in the land of Tawalisi in what is known today as Pangasinan in northern Luzon in the Philippines. Her being a warrior debunked the stereotype concept on the role of women, which under Spanish rule and with the onset of Catholicism, was next only to man. Unfortunately, much of our pre-Spanish past have been lost when its relics have been burned to the ground by the colonizers.

Accounts of Urduja as a leader of an army which have both men and women as warriors portrayed women with equal if not greater responsibilities in pre-Spanish groups. This portrayal is closely akin however to present-day Filipino family which has strong matriarchal influences. Women definitely portrays a huge role, with equal or yet more responsibility in raising the family.

Portraying Urduja has thus become a challenge for the Filipino group, 7toons and APT Entertainment, who have to use the art of animation and storytelling to capture our rich pre-Spanish past. It found it needed some fiction in story-telling, but the photos of their work on pre-Spanish characters are art by itself.

A Peek at Urduja

Set in the 13th century, Urduja was the princess of the Tawilisi tribe who lived in the plains of Central Luzon.

Due to the ongoing strife with the Batyaws, a tribe in the highlands, Lakanpati, the king and her father, trained her to be a warrior.

She was raised like a man, being the only child of the king.

With the king’s eventual passing of rule to Urduja, he worried about her future and decides to marry her off to the captain of the Tawilisi warriors, Simakwel, in order for the tribe to have a king. This did not sit well with Urduja as she had never had a liking to Simakwel.

The story revolves around Urduja's quest for her future with the person she loved. The film is scheduled for movie houses in the
Philippines on June 18.
